YuE2 instrumental: making music without vocals

YuE2 turns lyrics and a style prompt into a song with vocals and accompaniment. Instrumental output is possible, but it is a workflow on top of the model rather than a switch. Here is how the official route works and what you can do with a prompt alone.

What it is not

SHORT ANSWER

Yes, through the score

On September 25, 2026 the YuE2 authors added instrumental generation and instrumental covers to the yue2-music agent skill. It does not rely on a “no vocals” keyword. YuE2 first writes its usual symbolic plan, the skill moves every note of the vocal melody into the instrumental part, and the model renders the revised score. The final request carries empty lyrics or section tags only.

That is why instrumentals are tied to the editable score: the melody is still composed, it is simply played instead of sung.

TWO ROUTES

Score-based or prompt-based

Neither route is vocal removal. The upstream skill states that an instrumental cover is not stem separation: the reference is transcribed to a melody and performed again.

IN THE BROWSER

Prompting for an instrumental in this studio

The hosted workspace requires both fields, so the lyrics cannot be left blank. Give it structure without words, and make the style brief do the work.

  1. Start the style with the instruction

Open with “Instrumental, no vocals”, then the genre, tempo and instruments.

  2. Name the instrument that carries the melody

A lead piano, guitar or saxophone gives the tune somewhere to go once there is no singer.

  3. Use section tags as the lyrics

Enter tags such as [Intro], [Verse], [Chorus] and [Outro] on separate lines, with no words under them.

  4. Listen to the whole track

This route does not edit the score, so a wordless or hummed voice can still appear. Check the full result before you use it.

Each attempt uses credits like any other generation, so decide what you are testing before you submit.

INSTRUMENTAL COVERS

Turning a melody into an instrumental version

With the agent skill, a reference recording is transcribed by SheetSage2 into a melody score, the vocal notes are moved to the instrumental part, and YuE2 writes a new accompaniment around it. By default the melody is kept and the harmony is regenerated.

The music-to-music route in this studio is a different thing: it takes one reference recording you own together with a style brief and lyrics, and returns a new rendition. It is not an instrumental converter and does not strip vocals from the upload.

LIMITS

What is not guaranteed

  • The upstream skill says strict duration and note-for-note audio following are not guaranteed by the model.
  • A file check does not prove a track is free of vocals; the authors ask for listening as separate evidence.
  • The hosted workspace does not expose the ABC score, so the score-based transfer cannot be applied there.
  • There is no dedicated instrumental mode or toggle in this studio.

QUESTIONS

Short answers.

Answers are drawn from the sources listed below and from how this studio works today.

Can YuE2 generate instrumental music?

Yes. Since September 25, 2026 the official yue2-music agent skill creates instrumentals by letting YuE2 write the score, moving the vocal melody into the instrumental part, and rendering the result. It runs on the local runtime with an AI agent.

Can I leave the lyrics empty on yue2.pro?

No. The workspace requires lyrics. For a track without sung words, enter section tags such as [Intro], [Verse], [Chorus] and [Outro] with no text under them, and begin the style brief with “Instrumental, no vocals”.

Will a prompt-based instrumental always be vocal-free?

No. Without the score-based transfer, the result depends on the generation and a wordless voice can still appear. Listen to the full track before using it.

Does YuE2 remove vocals from an existing song?

No. An instrumental cover transcribes the melody and performs it again with new accompaniment. The authors describe it as not being vocal removal or stem separation.

What hardware does the official instrumental workflow need?

It uses the standard YuE2 runtime, whose supported baseline is a BF16-capable NVIDIA GPU with 24 GB of VRAM, one request at a time.
